VVS Laxman to join BCCI selection meetings regularly to share injury updates
BCCI wants selectors to have a complete picture of player fitness
VVS Laxman, head of the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, is set to attend India selection meetings regularly, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said. The arrangement is intended to ensure selectors have accurate information on player injuries and rehabilitation, and to prevent communication gaps between the selection panel, team management and the CoE.
“VVS was in the meeting to ensure there is no miscommunication between the selectors and the CoE,” Saikia told Times of India. He said Laxman oversees information on players’ injuries and that his regular presence at selection meetings was agreed at a review meeting in Mumbai.
Saikia stressed that the move was not about making selection more transparent. “It is about ensuring that the selectors get complete and accurate information so that they can make the right decisions,” he said.
Injuries complicate India’s planning
The change comes amid continuing concern within the BCCI over player injuries. After India’s third ODI against the West Indies, captain Shubman Gill described the team’s inability to field its preferred bowling group as frustrating, citing injuries, scheduling and other matches.
Gill also said India has limited time to experiment before the 2027 World Cup and wants to use future series to settle on the combination likely to feature in the tournament. Laxman’s attendance is intended to help selectors make those decisions with a fuller understanding of player availability.
