Government Cracks Down on Non-Recognized Sports Federations
Government Directs Sports Bodies to Change Names
The Union sports ministry has taken a firm stance on the usage of 'India' or 'Indian' by sports bodies not recognized as National Sports Federations (NSFs). The Differently Abled Cricket Council of India (DCCI) is among the bodies receiving directives to alter their names.
According to a letter sent to DCCI secretary Ravi Kant Chauhan, the ministry emphasized that only government-recognized federations are permitted to use these terms. Similar notices were issued to other bodies such as the Women's Football Federation of India and the Indian Body Builders' Federation.
The DCCI, lacking official recognition from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as an NSF, has been asked to cease using the terms 'India' or 'Indian'. Chauhan has requested NSF status for DCCI, highlighting their organization of various international and national tournaments.
Impact on Other Sports Bodies
This move is not isolated, as the ministry has also withdrawn recognition from the Taekwondo Federation of India, citing non-compliance with the Sports Code. The decision follows directions from the Delhi High Court and affects other sports bodies involved in similar activities.
A ministry source clarified that with the National Sports Governance Act now in effect, all sports bodies must seek recognition from the National Sports Board to gain ministry approval.
