Kohli and Gill centuries power India to eight-wicket win over West Indies in first ODI
India ease to series-opening win after Yadav's four-wicket haul
Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill piled on the runs as India crushed West Indies by eight wickets in the first One Day International at the Sports Hub International Cricket Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.
After India won the toss and elected to field, Kuldeep Yadav produced a decisive spell of 4 for 40 from 10 overs to help restrict the visitors to 295 for 7 from their allotted 50 overs. Justin Greaves anchored the West Indies innings with a measured 101 off 108 balls, while opener John Campbell provided a brisk start with 62 from 60 deliveries.
Amir Jangoo finished unbeaten on 58 from just 43 balls, but a flurry of late wickets — including Jewel Andrew for a duck and Roston Chase for 24 — left India needing 296 for victory.
Clinical chase seals comfortable victory
India's reply was emphatic. Rohit Sharma (32) and Gill (110) shared an opening stand of 74 before Rohit was caught by Andrew off the bowling of Alzarri Joseph. Gill then anchored the innings with his century, only to fall for 110 — caught by Andrew off Roston Chase — with the score on 225 for 2.
Kohli took over in stunning fashion, smashing an unbeaten 139 from just 88 balls, laced with 10 fours and 9 sixes, at a strike rate of 157.95. Ruturaj Gaikwad (13 not out) offered late support as India reached 300 for 2 from 41.4 overs, sealing an eight-wicket triumph with 8.2 overs to spare.
