Ramsey Left Out of Wales World Cup Play-Off Squad

Once a cornerstone of the Welsh national team, Aaron Ramsey has been left out of coach Craig Bellamys squad for the upcoming World Cup play-off matches, casting further doubt on the veteran midfielders international future.

Wales are set to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup play-off semi-final on March 26 at Cardiff City Stadium. A victory would pit them against either Italy or Northern Ireland for a chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Success in both fixtures would see Wales placed in Group B alongside Switzerland, Qatar, and co-hosts Canada.

Ramsey, 35, has not been included in the 26-man squad, a decision rooted in his prolonged absence from competitive football. The former Arsenal and Juventus star has been without a club since departing Mexican side Pumas in December and hasnt played a competitive match since September 2024. His last appearance for Wales was also in September 2024, and his lack of match fitness and regular game time played a key role in the selection decision.

Aaron Ramsey playing for Wales

Despite his recent inactivity, Ramseys past contributions to the national team remain significant. He was instrumental in Wales historic run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, earning a spot in the tournaments official Team of the Tournament. However, his struggles with form and fitness in recent years have led to a gradual decline in his role.

Coach Craig Bellamy downplayed the difficulty of the decision, stating: He hasn't played competitive football in seven months. Hes not at a club. It [Ramseys future] is not really for me to talk about. Its a situation Im sure which will resolve itself.

Wales last World Cup appearance in 2022 ended in the group stage, where they secured just one point from their three matches against England, Iran, and the United States. Ramsey started all three games, completing 81.1% of his passes but failing to register a goal or assist.

With qualification hopes still alive, Bellamys focus now turns to building momentum with players currently active at the club level. Ramseys omission signals a potential changing of the guard as Wales looks to usher in a new era on the international stage.
