Ugo Ugochukwu seals historic F3 title after dramatic Madrid comeback
Ugochukwu completes remarkable fightback to become F3 champion
Ugo Ugochukwu has reflected on the dramatic comeback that made him the first American to win the FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship, admitting that the achievement has only fully begun to sink in a week after the title decider in Madrid.

The American entered the final race level on points with title rival Freddie Slater after recovering from a difficult penultimate round at Monza. Ugochukwu had started that weekend 23rd after a troubled qualifying session and a grid penalty, but fought back to 13th in the Sprint Race before finishing eighth in the Feature despite early contact that dropped him to the back.
That recovery proved crucial. Ugochukwu said the performance restored his belief before the decisive Madrid weekend, where he focused on qualifying strongly and avoiding mistakes.
“Then in Madrid, I just took the opportunity with both hands and really knew I had a chance to get the title back. I treated it as a fresh weekend, fully reset and just tried to do the best possible job.”
Ugochukwu said the pressure was manageable because the deficit remained close enough to keep the championship within reach. He and his team delivered what he described as a clean weekend, executing both qualifying sessions without the errors that could have ended his challenge.
Melbourne provided the early breakthrough
Although Madrid was the scene of his championship triumph, Ugochukwu identified the season-opening weekend in Melbourne as one of his strongest performances. He felt immediately comfortable with the car and the circuit, secured his maiden F3 victory and built the confidence that the title could be within reach.
“The race pace was super good and I was able to pull away,” he said, describing Melbourne as a key momentum-building result.
F2 is the next logical step
Ugochukwu now expects the next stage of his career to involve a move up the single-seater ladder. While his plans have not yet been confirmed, he said Formula 2 was the natural progression and expressed pride at becoming the first American champion in F3.
“It’s a big step in my career, a big achievement,” Ugochukwu said. “I’m super happy as well to be the first American to do it. It makes me really proud to be able to represent my country well.”
With Freddie Slater already confirmed for the 2027 F2 grid, the pair could meet again in the next stage of their careers. For now, Ugochukwu is determined to build on his title-winning campaign and continue putting the American flag on the top step of the podium.
