Nico Rosberg warns Kimi Antonelli that his mind is the final hurdle to the 2026 F1 title

Rosberg identifies Antonelli’s biggest title challenge

Kimi Antonelli is on course to become Formula 1’s youngest world champion, but Nico Rosberg believes the Mercedes driver’s toughest opponent may be his own mind.

Antonelli leads Mercedes team-mate George Russell by 81 points, with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamiton 101 points adrift and McLaren’s Lando Norris 106 points behind. With nine rounds remaining, the championship leader arrives at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after winning the last two races.

Speaking on The F1 Show, Rosberg drew on his own experience of winning the 2016 championship. He said the pressure of being the favourite can introduce fear and self-doubt at precisely the moment a driver needs maximum concentration.

“It’s really him against his mind now, so we see how that goes, but he’s doing incredibly well,” Rosberg said.

Rosberg explained that thoughts about making an avoidable mistake can consume part of a driver’s mental capacity. The difficulty of qualifying at the front, completing clean laps and avoiding the barriers means even a small loss of concentration can have major consequences.

“When you’re really the big favourite, like he is now, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, this is actually mine for the taking. I better not mess this up,’” Rosberg said.

Antonelli has shown no sign of pressure so far

Despite Rosberg’s warning, Antonelli’s recent form has been emphatic. He fought from 19th to victory at his home event in Monza before winning again at the new Madrid circuit a week later.

Rosberg’s own title campaign became mentally difficult during the final four races of 2016, when he could afford to finish second rather than win. He said fear of throwing away the championship reduced the capacity he had available to drive at his best.

“It’s really so damn difficult to not make mistakes and to be there, qualify time and time again and do good laps and not put it on the wall,” Rosberg said.

McLaren development could change the championship picture

Rosberg also warned that Antonelli’s advantage could become more fragile if McLaren begins to pull away technically, or if Ferrari makes a significant step forward. Lando Norris has been a major threat and might have won three of the last four races without an untimely virtual safety car in Madrid.

McLaren is bringing new parts to Baku, while Mercedes is expected to introduce a major upgrade package at the following race in Malaysia. If Antonelli slips back into the midfield while his rivals improve, Rosberg believes the additional pressure could increase the risk of mistakes.

“If you were to drop back into the pack ever so slightly, again, the risk just comes up more and you start to get more and more panicked about things,” he said.

Azerbaijan begins the next title test

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is the opening round of a triple-header and will be staged on Saturday, with the race scheduled for midday. The championship battle resumes in Baku with Antonelli holding a substantial lead, but Rosberg’s message is clear: maintaining control under pressure may determine whether the young Mercedes driver completes his march to the title.
