Lewis Hamilton shuts down Ferrari personnel change reports ahead of Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Hamilton hits back at 'stories' over Ferrari shake-up claims

Lewis Hamilton has moved to publicly shut down reports in the Italian media that he has demanded personnel changes at Ferrari, taking to social media on Thursday to insist he has never called for anyone on his team to be replaced.

This week, reports in Italy claimed the seven-time world champion had been pushing team principal Frederic Vasseur to make operational changes following two difficult weekends at Monza and Madrid. Hamilton, however, used his Instagram account to clear the matter up.

"I've seen some of the stories that have gone out and I want to clear it up here. I've never asked for anyone on my team to be replaced. Everyone I work with works hard every day, and their dedication is what moves us forward."

He added: "I always try to empower and lift people to be the best versions of themselves or at least see the best in themselves. I may not always achieve that but it's my intention and what I'm here to do. We all work together and that will continue."

A struggling run of form

The denial comes at a difficult moment in Hamilton's campaign. The Briton has fallen 101 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli with nine rounds remaining, having scored just eight points across the last two races.

Ferrari introduced an upgraded engine for their home event at the Italian Grand Prix, but Hamilton could only manage sixth, while team-mate Charles Leclerc crashed out. A brake problem then forced Hamilton into his first retirement of the season in Madrid.

The Monza flashpoint

Hamilton had earlier called for "rules of engagement" at Ferrari after he was forced wide into the gravel by Leclerc on the opening lap of the Italian Grand Prix. The British driver stated "the buck starts with Fred (Vasseur)" before Ferrari held talks with their drivers, during which Leclerc admitted he was at fault for the incident.

Hopes of a record-breaking eighth world title have faded since the summer break, with Hamilton failing to reach the podium in the last five races. After Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix, he conceded: "I think there's no stopping him (Antonelli) and Mercedes this year. They've done a phenomenal job and they deserve it."

Attention now turns to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which kicks off a triple-header from September 24-26 with the Baku race taking place on a Saturday.
