Boland’s training form rekindles selection debate

Scott Boland has given Australia’s selectors another difficult decision ahead of the second Test against South Africa in Gqeberha. The seamer again troubled batters in training, renewing the possibility that he could join Australia’s three other fast bowlers in the XI.

Captain Pat Cummins acknowledged the dilemma before the match, saying: “You know when you got someone like Scotty every Test match, you leave some training sessions shaking your head, how that bloke isn’t in your first XI.”

Lyon could be the one to make way

Boland’s possible inclusion could come at the expense of Nathan Lyon, as it did in Australia’s Tests at Sabina Park last July and the Gabba during the Ashes in December. The report said Boland prepared as though he might play, but there was no confirmation: selectors were expected to make their call after inspecting the pitch and considering the forecast.

The surface had 6–8 millimetres of grass, while rain threatened the opening two days. Australia also had to weigh Lyon’s value on a ground where spin has been influential. He took two wickets in Durban, both from catches by Steve Smith.

A proven option, but not an automatic pick

Boland’s recent Test record makes the case for his selection compelling. He averaged 13.19 while taking 21 wickets against India two summers ago and claimed 20 wickets at 24.95 in the Ashes. Between those series, he took a Test hat-trick in Kingston and finished with match figures of 6/36.

Much of that run came when Cummins or Josh Hazlewood—or both—were unavailable. With both senior quicks back, Boland’s place has been harder to secure. His ability to trouble South Africa’s batting, including two relatively inexperienced batters in the hosts’ lineup, adds to the temptation, but Australia’s selectors still had to balance the conditions against Lyon’s role.
