Chad Laycock Makes History With Five-Wicket Over as KZN Inland Fall Short Against Titans
A Rare Feat in Pietermaritzburg
Teenager Chad Laycock wrote his name into the record books on Tuesday, becoming the first bowler ever to take five wickets in a single over in South African T20 cricket. The 19-year-old achieved the feat while playing for KZN Inland against the Titans in the CSA Pro20 Cup in Pietermaritzburg, finishing with career-best figures of 6/26.
How the Historic Over Unfolded
The game-changing over arrived in the 19th over of the Titans innings. Laycock struck first by dismissing Leus du Plooy, before ripping through the lower order to remove Dayyaan Galiem, Aphiwe Mnyanda, Janco Smit and Esosa Aihevba off the next four deliveries.
That sequence gave Laycock four wickets in four consecutive deliveries — a rarity in South African T20 cricket. Among Full Member teams in T20 internationals, only Lasith Malinga, Rashid Khan, Curtis Campher and Jason Holder have previously achieved the four-wicket-in-four-ball sequence.
His five-wicket burst abruptly ended the Titans innings at 204, a total that had looked far more imposing when the side sat at 193/4 before the over began.
A Record-Breaking Return
Laycock's 6/26 also set a new benchmark for the best bowling figures in CSA Pro20 Cup history, surpassing Beuran Hendricks' 6/29 from 2014.
Earlier in the contest, Laycock had provided KZN Inland with their first breakthrough by dismissing Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who had blasted 81 off just 36 balls, in the ninth over. Pretorius and his opening partner had put together a 112-run stand before the young seamer broke through.
Heroics Not Enough for KZN Inland
Despite Laycock's remarkable spell, his performance was not enough to deliver a victory. Chasing 205, KZN Inland finished on 183/6, losing the match by 21 runs. Laycock remained unbeaten on 31 with the bat.
The result extended table-toppers Titans' unbeaten run in the competition to six matches.

According to Cricinfo, Laycock became just the fourth bowler known to have taken five wickets in an over in men's T20 cricket. Bangladesh's Al-Amin Hossain, India's Abhinav Mithun and Indonesia's Gede Priandana had achieved the feat before him.
Priandana remains the only bowler, male or female, to take five wickets in an over in a T20 international, a feat he achieved against Cambodia in December 2025. Al-Amin took five wickets in an over while playing for UCB-BCB XI against Abahani Limited in the 2013-14 Victory Day T20 Cup, while Mithun achieved the milestone in the 2019-20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy semifinal, playing for Karnataka against Haryana.
