Sunderland have continued their summer rebuild ahead of their return to the Premier League by completing the signing of midfielder Jules Ahoka from Royal Antwerp in a deal reportedly worth up to £8m.

The 20-year-old has signed a long-term contract at the Stadium of Light and becomes head coach Regis Le Bris' third addition of the summer window, following the arrivals of Thomas Munier and Dayann Methalie. Ahoka has been handed the club's number 29 shirt.

From DR Congo to Belgium to the Premier League

Ahoka joined Royal Antwerp from AC Normands in his native DR Congo last September, penning a four-year deal in Belgium. He featured in both of Antwerp's Jupiler Pro League matches at the start of this season and was a key member of the DR Congo youth squad that finished fourth at this summer's prestigious Toulon Under-20s Tournament — a competition that has long served as a showcase for emerging talent.

Sunderland director Florent Ghisolfi revealed the club had been tracking the young midfielder for some time before making their move.

"Jules is a player we have been following closely, and he has shown some very encouraging qualities for his age," said Ghisolfi.

"His performances at the Toulon Tournament demonstrated his physicality, defensive qualities and mentality, while he has also gained valuable experience in Belgium. He has huge potential, and we believe Sunderland is the right environment for him to continue his development."

Ahoka: I want to work hard and give everything

The young midfielder expressed his delight at securing a move to the Premier League and outlined his determination to make an impact on Wearside.

"I am very happy and proud to join Sunderland," said Ahoka. "It is a big club with great ambitions, and I am excited to be here. I want to work hard, learn from my team-mates and the staff, and continue developing as a player. I will give everything for the club and I cannot wait to get started."

Midfield competition and potential departure

Ahoka's arrival adds further depth and competition to a Sunderland midfield that already includes Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra, as the club prepares for the challenge of Premier League football and a potential European campaign in 2026-27.

However, the signing could also pave the way for the departure of Alan Browne, who spent last season on loan in the Championship with Middlesbrough and may now find first-team opportunities further limited on Wearside.

Early season form

Sunderland began their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 defeat away to Ipswich Town and will look to register their first points of the season when they welcome Fulham to the Stadium of Light this Sunday.
