India's WTC hopes take a hit after Colombo draw leaves them fifth

India's WTC race tightens after Colombo draw leaves them fifth

India's hard-fought draw against Sri Lanka in the second Test at the Colombo SSC has significantly complicated their road to the World Test Championship final. Sri Lanka managed to hold on after a remarkable fifth-day fightback, meaning India took just 16 points from the series instead of a maximum 24 and finished with a 1-0 series win rather than a 2-0 sweep.

The result leaves India fifth in the WTC points table with a percentage of 51.52, while Bangladesh's 1-1 draw in Australia has made the race for the two final spots considerably more interesting as the fourth WTC cycle moves into its next phase.

Where India stand

India have seven Tests remaining in the current cycle: a two-match away series against New Zealand followed by a five-Test home series against Australia. According to the updated points table after the Colombo Test, Australia lead with 80.00%, followed by South Africa (75.00%), New Zealand (72.22%), Bangladesh (55.56%), India (51.52%), Sri Lanka (33.33%), England (29.76%), West Indies (20.83%) and Pakistan (19.05%).

What India need to do

The simplest path remains winning all seven remaining Tests, which would put India on 70.37% and in a very strong position to reach the final. Alternatively, India can afford one defeat: six wins and a single loss would take their final percentage to close to 65%, while also denying points to table leaders Australia, against whom they play five of those matches.

For context, the previous two WTC cycles saw finalists qualify with a wide range of percentages. South Africa and Australia reached the last final with 69.44% and 67.54% respectively, while in the 2023 edition Australia qualified with 66.67% and India made it through with 58.80%.

A tricky scenario in New Zealand

India's situation turns considerably more difficult if they lose both Tests in New Zealand. Even a 5-0 whitewash of Australia at home would then leave them on just 59.26%, keeping them in contention but heavily dependent on other results going their way. The Colombo draw has therefore magnified the importance of the New Zealand tour and the Border-Gavaskar series at home, leaving India with little room for error despite qualification still being in their own hands.

The wider picture

While Australia are best placed with 10 Tests left, South Africa have a tough away cycle with all their remaining away rubbers in Asia. New Zealand sit third with 72.22% and can boost their chances by winning home series against India and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh, in the middle of their best-ever WTC campaign, have four of their six remaining Tests at home against non-Asian sides and will need to maximise those to stay in contention. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, bagged just four points from 24 available at home against India and have only one home series left in their remaining three.

England, Pakistan and West Indies all have negligible chances of a top-two finish, with maximum possible percentages of 53.17%, 56.41% and 32.14% respectively.
