Curaçao's Viral 2026 World Cup Away Kit May Never See the Pitch

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, the focus hasn't just been on the players, but on the fashion. Among the expanded field of participants, one unexpected hit has emerged from the Caribbean island nation of Curaçao. Ranked No. 82 in the world by FIFA, the underdog team has captured the attention of fans worldwide not just for their participation, but for their striking aesthetic.

A Design Rooted in Culture

The away kit, produced by Adidas, features a pastel yellow base accented by pink, turquoise, and orange stripes. According to the manufacturer, the design “celebrates the capital city Willemstad and the colorful buildings that reside in its Punda and Otrobanda districts.” This retro approach has resonated strongly on social media, turning the shirt into a must-have item for collectors and fans.

High Demand, Low Supply

The popularity of the kit is evident in its availability. The shirt has almost entirely sold out on Adidas’ U.S. website, with only small sizes remaining in stock. While this scarcity may be partly due to Adidas stocking the kit in lower volumes compared to global giants, the demand has been unprecedented. Adidas has since confirmed to The Athletic that they plan to restock the shirt later this summer.

The 'Cruel Twist' of FIFA Designations

Despite the hype, fans may not see the kit in action during the tournament. FIFA's recently released World Cup match color designations guide indicates that Curaçao is scheduled to wear its home shirt for all three of its Group E matches against Germany, Ecuador, and Ivory Coast.

Given the strength of their group opponents, analysts suggest it is unlikely that Curaçao will advance to the knockout stages, meaning the popular away kit will likely remain in the locker room. The team did, however, get to showcase the design during a pre-tournament friendly against Scotland last Saturday, a match that ended in a 4-1 victory for the Scots.

Other Kits in Limbo

Curaçao isn't the only team facing this dilemma. Japan's away kit—featuring 12 multi-colored vertical stripes representing the 11 players and the fans—is also slated to be sidelined during the group stage in favor of their blue home top. However, Japan's placement in Group F with the Netherlands, Sweden, and Tunisia may give them a better chance of reaching the knockout rounds and finally debuting their away colors.
