England complete 3-0 Test sweep of Pakistan with eight-wicket Edgbaston win as Joe Root breaks Sachin Tendulkar's fourth-innings record
England seal the whitewash at Edgbaston
England completed a 3-0 Test series clean sweep of Pakistan with an eight-wicket win in the third Test at Edgbaston, finishing the campaign on a winning note despite a spirited late fightback from the tourists.
Pakistan, to their credit, did not go quietly. Debutant Razaullah Khan refused to let his side fold, writing his name into the record books by equalling the six-hitting records of Ben Stokes and Tim Southee, and together with the experienced Abbas he forced England into a tricky chase at Edgbaston. England, though, held their nerve to get over the line with eight wickets in hand.
Root goes where no batter has gone in 147 years
The series will also be remembered for Joe Root's landmark achievement. The England batter became the first in 147 years of Test cricket to score 2,000 fourth-innings runs, breaking Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record in the process. TOI also noted that the England-Pakistan series produced a rare Test feat not witnessed for 138 years.
Pakistan's numbers make grim reading
While England celebrated, Pakistan were left counting the cost of a dismal tour. Their openers managed just 20 runs across six innings in three Tests — the worst Test series by openers in 35 years, according to TOI. Babar Azam did enter the record books himself, achieving a major World Test Championship feat against England, but it could not mask the scale of the 0-3 defeat.
Calling for changes in the aftermath, Babar said: “We need to sit down and reflect on our mistakes.”
Pressure mounts on the Pakistan setup
The criticism has been swift. Wasim Akram branded Pakistan's shocking mid-tour changes “embarrassing”, and while questioning the batting crisis asked pointedly: “Have we produced a batter like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?” Pakistan's team coach, however, defended the players despite the horror run in England: “There's a lot of quality in Pakistan.”
England's whitewash also had ramifications beyond the series, with TOI's updated World Test Championship points table examining where India stand following the 3-0 result.
