Cincinnati urged to respond after Leagues Cup disappointment

FC Cincinnati midfielder Evander has called on his teammates to show “more urgency as a team” after their Leagues Cup campaign ended with a damaging 2-1 defeat by Atlas.

Cincinnati appeared to be in control after Evander scored to put them ahead at half-time. Having already defeated Pachuca and U.N.A.M., they needed victory over Atlas to reach the quarter-finals, but a second-half collapse ended their hopes of lifting the trophy.

Evander said the team had been presented with “the best scenario possible” to advance and described the result as an opportunity thrown away in front of their supporters.

“We need to be better, we need to have more urgency as a team,” Evander said. “We need to feel this loss and what it means in front of our fans.”

He added that Cincinnati must use the disappointment as motivation when they return to MLS action against Orlando City.

“We need to have just more urgency to win these games and show to the fans that we want to win,” Evander said, insisting the team must be prepared “from the first to the last second.”

Orlando also seeking a response

Orlando City were also eliminated in the opening round, despite defeating Atletico San Luis on penalties in their final group match. Interim head coach Martin Perelman said the competition had still provided valuable minutes and a demanding test for his squad.

“It was our goal to have the full roster able to compete, and I think today the guys performed,” Perelman said. “Now we’re thinking about the next one.”

High-scoring MLS meeting awaits

The upcoming fixture brings together two teams with contrasting recent memories. Cincinnati recorded a 6-2 victory over Orlando in May, matching the largest winning margin in the history of the fixture. The six goals also equalled Cincinnati’s highest total in an MLS match and matched Orlando’s largest number of goals conceded in a league game.

Cincinnati have scored 45 goals and conceded 44 across 18 regular-season matches in 2026, producing 89 combined goals—the highest total by seven compared with any other team at the same stage of an MLS season. Orlando, meanwhile, have lost four matches in which they scored at least twice, the joint-highest total in a single season in club history.

Eduard Atuesta and Justin Ellis have each provided at least three MLS assists since the return from the World Cup, underlining Orlando’s creative threat. Cincinnati will again look to Evander, who recently scored once and supplied three assists in a 4-2 win over the San Jose Earthquakes. That was his second MLS match this season with at least one goal and three assists.

Opta’s pre-match model gives Orlando a 38.6 per cent chance of victory, compared with 34.9 per cent for Cincinnati and 26.5 per cent for a draw.
