F1's 2026 Engine Compression Ratio Loophole Sparks Political Firestorm Ahead of New Season
A political firestorm has been brewing in Formula 1 over whether engine manufacturers have found a loophole in the new 2026 technical regulations. Mercedes and Red Bull are believed to have discovered a way to improve performance through their interpretations of the engine cylinder compression rules, which changed the ratio from 18:1 to 16:1 this season.
The controversy centres on how much the engine can squeeze fuel before burning it. The more the engine compresses the fuel, the hotter it becomes, which increases the power it can produce — though if pushed too far, it becomes counterproductive. The ratio is checked for compliance at ambient temperature, but it is believed that Mercedes and Red Bull have found a way to increase it when the cars' temperatures skyrocket on track, unlocking additional performance.
Breaking Down the Loophole
This season, power units use more electricity, with an almost 50/50 split between internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric power. Inside the ICE are the six cylinders in question, where air and fuel flow through. The compression ratio measures how much the fuel can be compressed in the confined space before ignition occurs.
The first number in the ratio is the cylinder's volume when the piston is at its lowest point, while the second number is the volume when the piston is at its highest stroke. A higher ratio means the engine can squeeze more of the air and fuel mixture, allowing it to extract more power from the same amount of fuel. Fuel flow is restricted in the sport, with the maximum fuel energy flow rate being around 3,000 megajoules per hour.
Heading into this season, the compression ratio dropped from 18:1 to 16:1 as part of the technical regulation overhaul, partly to make power unit development easier for newer engine manufacturers. However, as the off-season wore on, rumors began circulating that some teams had found a way around the restrictions.
The key lies in when the FIA scrutineers check the compression ratio. According to Article C5.4.3, measurements are taken "at ambient temperature" — when the engine is at the temperature of the surrounding environment, which is cooler than when the engine is running. The thought is that Mercedes and Red Bull may have found a way to comply with the regulations when the cars are stationary and engines are cool during checks, but reach an 18:1 ratio when running hotter on track. The advantage could be a few tenths of a second per lap, depending on the track.
A Wider Impact Across the Grid
This controversy extends well beyond two teams. Mercedes provides engines for Alpine, Williams and McLaren, while Red Bull supplies engines for itself and Racing Bulls. Any performance advantage — or any rule change — ripples across half the grid.
There are early signs that the teams aren't as closely matched as the razor-thin margins fans enjoyed in the 2025 season. Carlos Sainz said in Williams' post-Day 3 testing recap: "It is clear that the gap between teams is not as tight as last year, at least not for now."
The FIA Responds
In a statement, the FIA said it has been aware of the issue since it first emerged late last year. Under the current rules, compression ratios are measured at room temperature under static conditions — a method that hasn't changed even with the new, tighter limit. While engine heat can affect physical dimensions, the rules don't require testing at operating temperature.
The FIA acknowledged that the topic is being actively discussed among power unit manufacturers, noting that "the new limit naturally raises questions about interpretation and compliance." However, the governing body indicated that "adjustments to the regulations or measurement procedures can be considered for the future" — a statement that didn't completely close the door on the loophole.
Push for a Rule Change Before Melbourne
Rival engine manufacturers have been trying to get the FIA to close the loophole so the 16:1 ratio also applies when the engines are hot. In the last two weeks, Red Bull changed its position on the matter, aligning with Ferrari, Audi and Honda. With four out of five engine manufacturers in agreement, a rule change could be pushed through if they form a supermajority and Formula One Management (FOM) and the FIA support it.
The four OEMs want the rule change before the Australian Grand Prix, with first practice taking place on March 6. The FIA announced that a proposed change is now open for e-voting among power unit manufacturers, with results expected in about 10 days — closing before the homologation date of March 1. The FIA World Motor Sport Council will need to give final approval for any regulation changes.
"Over recent weeks and months, the FIA and the Power Unit Manufacturers have collaboratively developed a methodology to quantify how the compression ratio changes from ambient to operating conditions," the FIA stated. "Following validation of this approach, a proposal has been submitted whereby, from 1 August 2026, compliance with the compression ratio limit must be demonstrated not only at ambient conditions, but also at a representative operating temperature of 130°C."
What the Paddock Had to Say
FIA single seater director Nikolas Tombazis said in a recent video about the 2026 technical regulations: "It's impossible when we have new rules not to have such areas of discussion. That's always been the case. I think what has changed is that we are determined to make this a championship of competition between the best drivers, the best engineers, the teams, but not a championship of rule interpretation. We want it to be a championship of engineering prowess as well as driving prowess, but not who's a smarter rule interpreter."
During the first three-day round of preseason testing in Bahrain in early February, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described F1 as a sport "full of surprises," touching on how "there's never a situation where you can say you're sure about anything."
"All along the process, when you design an engine, you're keeping the FIA very close to the decisions you make, and that's what we did," Wolff continued. "We have had all the assurances that what we did was according to the rule."
Audi team principal Jonathan Wheatley said during a news conference at the second week of preseason testing: "I know that each power unit manufacturer is working very closely with the FIA on this topic, and we trust 100 percent in their ability to manage this right the way through this entire set of technical regulations. So I think on our part, it's in safe hands."
Red Bull's Laurent Mekies struck a more urgent tone: "The simple truth is that we don't really mind if the regs goes left, if the regs goes right. What we absolutely want is clarity on what we can do and what we cannot do." He added: "It's true that it's early days, but it will come to a point very quickly where any competitive advantage, whether it is one, two, three, whatever number of tenths (of a second), is going to make a difference."
Williams team principal James Vowles thought the issue was overstated. "There's probably a misunderstanding of just how significant it is," he said, calling it "just noise" while acknowledging he understands "why everyone was focused on it."
The real power lies with the Power Unit Advisory Committee, a separate group from the F1 Commission that oversees engine governance and comprises the five manufacturers, FOM, and the FIA. The group has met to discuss the matter, but no resolution was reached. Now, the paddock waits to see whether a supermajority will push through the vote and close the loophole before the season truly gets underway.
