Inter boss Chivu pledges Lautaro Martínez will stay amid Barcelona interest
Inter Milan stand firm on Lautaro Martínez as Barcelona circle
Inter Milan head coach Christian Chivu has moved to shut down growing speculation linking captain and star striker Lautaro Martínez with a switch to Barcelona, insisting the Argentine will remain a cornerstone of his squad.
The frontman's name has dominated headlines in Catalonia this week. With the Barcelona boardroom growing frustrated in their pursuit of primary centre-forward target Julián Alvarez, attention has reportedly shifted towards Martínez, his fellow countryman.
Martínez arrives off the back of another prolific campaign in Italy, registering 28 direct goal contributions as Inter secured the club's latest Scudetto crown. His form has placed him firmly on Barcelona's shortlist as they seek reinforcements in attack at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Asked about the forward's immediate future on Friday, Chivu was unequivocal in his response, even as he acknowledged the unpredictability of the market:
"Lautaro is our captain and we keep him with us. I think he will stay here for a very long time. Then the transfer market is a bastard… so I'm not gonna reply. For sure, we want Lautaro to stay here."
The Inter chief's comments represent a firm rebuke to any notion of a summer exit, even as Barcelona continue to search for a long-term solution in the final third following their difficulties landing a first-choice No. 9.
