WSL's foreign influx sparks alarm for England as homegrown starters fall below a third
The WSL's ability to attract the world's best players is colliding with the development of homegrown talent, after London City Lionesses named the first-ever starting XI without an English player on the opening night of the season. Regular homegrown starters have fallen to under a third — far below the levels in France, Germany and Spain — prompting warnings that England's future could suffer. With Sarina Wiegman's side beaten 4-0 by Spain in June and facing play-offs to reach the 2027 World Cup, the FA has approved plans for WSL academy sides to join the National League from 2027-28, but critics including Ellen White say the eight-player homegrown quota must go much further.
London City's all-foreign opening XI sparks 'alarming' WSL homegrown debate
London City Lionesses became the first WSL side to name an opening-day starting XI without a single English player, sparking an 'alarming' debate over the league's shrinking homegrown representation and its impact on England's national team.
