Lionel Messi Hints at Final Home World Cup Qualifier for Argentina
Lionel Messi, the captain of Inter Miami and Argentina’s national football team, has hinted that the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Venezuela could mark his last competitive international match on home soil. The 38-year-old football legend, who has previously retired and returned to international soccer, expressed uncertainty about participating in another qualifying cycle beyond 2026.

Messi emphasized the emotional significance of the match, stating, "Yes, it’s going to be special, a very special match for me because it’s the last qualifier game. I don’t know if there will be a friendly or more games afterward, but yes, it’s a very special match, and that’s why my family will be with me, my wife, my kids, my parents, my siblings, and also as many relatives as possible from my wife’s side." He added, "After that, like I said, I don’t know what will happen, but we’re going in with that mindset."
His decision to continue playing for Argentina after their 2022 World Cup triumph has been fueled by the inspiration he derives from his talented teammates, whom he has mentored throughout his illustrious career.
The match against Venezuela is scheduled to take place at the Estadio Monumental, followed by Argentina's game in Ecuador. Regardless of the outcomes, Argentina has already secured their place in the World Cup, allowing Messi to reflect on his storied international journey.
