Tamim Iqbal to Contest BCB Elections, Eyes Presidency
Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal has announced his intention to participate in the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections. While aiming for a director position, Iqbal also hinted at potential aspirations for the presidency, depending on the support he garners after the initial elections.

The BCB is expected to announce its Election Commission soon, with a decision likely to be finalized in the next board meeting. The electoral process will involve the selection of 12 directors from Dhaka-based clubs, 10 from regional and district cricket associations, one from other representatives, and two nominated by the National Sports Council. These 25 members will then elect the board president.
"If the presidency were a direct election, I could say whether I am running or not," Iqbal stated in an interview. "That will be decided after the board of directors is elected. If I find I have enough support then, I might run. For now, I will say I want to become a director first." He emphasized the need for decision-making authority to drive meaningful change in Bangladesh cricket.
Iqbal, who has investments in two cricket clubs as an organizer, expressed confidence in his prospects of being elected as a director. He called for a shift away from internal politics and urged the selection of qualified candidates who can modernize the board’s approach. "What does Bangladesh cricket need most right now? ... improving facilities," he asserted, pointing out the stark contrast between the BCB’s financial strength and its inadequate infrastructure.
The current BCB committee is expected to hold the next election by October 7, 2025, in line with constitutional requirements. The process will include notifying nominations for councillors and forming an Election Commission to finalize rules and schedules.
