Liverpool's Stalled Pursuit of Alexander Isak: Anfield Club Balks at Newcastle's £150M Valuation
Liverpool finds itself embroiled in a high-stakes transfer stalemate with Newcastle United over the acquisition of star striker Alexander Isak. The Anfield club is reportedly unwilling to capitulate to Newcastle's audacious £150 million ($202.6 million) asking price for the Swedish international, creating a significant hurdle in what promised to be a record-breaking summer move.
After six weeks of intense negotiations, Liverpool's latest offer, a substantial £110 million, was met with a firm rejection from the Tyneside club. While Newcastle initially maintained a rigid no-sale stance, their position has reportedly softened following indications that Isak himself is keen to depart St James' Park and has no desire to play for the Magpies again.
However, despite the player's apparent wishes, Newcastle shows no inclination to budge on their commanding valuation. Liverpool, on the other hand, is reportedly only prepared to elevate their offer to £120 million. This figure falls short of the £130 million previously rumored and reflects Liverpool's conviction that they would be 'bidding against themselves,' given Isak's expressed preference for a move to Merseyside.
Should an agreement be struck at £120 million, it would still represent a monumental sum, nearly doubling what Newcastle paid for Isak three years prior. More significantly, it would establish a new British transfer record, eclipsing the potential £116 million Liverpool may have committed to securing Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz earlier in the summer.
The path to Isak's potential arrival at Anfield is further complicated by Newcastle's own squad needs. With Callum Wilson having already departed St James' Park this summer, the Magpies would likely need to secure a replacement striker if Isak were to leave. This necessity has brought Brentford's Yoane Wissa into the spotlight, with the Bees reportedly seeking £60 million for their top Premier League goalscorer, even after securing substantial funds from other player sales.
