West Ham Signs Midfielder Mateus Fernandes for £40m in Major Transfer Boost
West Ham United have made a significant addition to their squad by signing Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Southampton for a reported fee exceeding £40 million. The 21-year-old, a rising star in the sport, becomes the club's sixth signing of the summer transfer window amid a challenging start to the Premier League season.

Fernandes, a Portuguese Under-21 international, joins West Ham after a standout season with Southampton, despite their relegation from the Premier League. He featured in 36 league matches, starting 34, and contributed two goals and four assists while creating 34 chances, a team-high statistic. His performances have earned him a key role in West Ham's midfield.
Upon signing a five-year contract, Fernandes expressed his enthusiasm: "I'm very happy to be here. I'm very excited to play for West Ham. I think it's a big step for me. It's a big club, a massive club. The project, the stadium, the city, everything. I want to try to play football, enjoy football, not just run and try to score, but try to play good football."
The transfer makes Fernandes the third most expensive player in West Ham's history, trailing only Lucas Paqueta and Sebastien Haller. His arrival provides a much-needed boost for manager Graham Potter, who is under pressure after West Ham's poor start to the season, including two consecutive league losses and an early exit from the EFL Cup.
Fernandes joins fellow summer signings Callum Wilson, Kyle Walker-Peters, Mads Hermansen, and El Hadji Malick Diouf, along with Jean-Clair Todibo, whose loan move was made permanent for £35 million. The club hopes Fernandes' creativity and energy will help turn their fortunes around.
