Darwin to Host First Test Match in 22 Years as Part of Bangladesh Tour

Darwin to Host First Test Match in 22 Years as Part of Bangladesh Tour

Darwin is poised to host its first Test match in over two decades, with Cricket Australia considering splitting next year's tour between the Northern Territory and North Queensland. This move comes after players expressed satisfaction with the return of international cricket to Darwin for recent white-ball matches against South Africa, which saw sell-out crowds.

The Bangladesh tour, part of the World Test Championship, is scheduled for next year and will feature a two-Test series. While Mackay, Cairns, Townsville, and Darwin are all potential venues, Darwin is the frontrunner to secure one of the Tests. Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg indicated a desire to host matches in various locations to engage younger fans and expressed enthusiasm for playing more cricket in Darwin, highlighting the favorable conditions once weather is removed as a variable.

The Bangladesh Tests were rescheduled from March 2027 due to the 150th anniversary Test between Australia and England at the MCG. Australia's planned tour by Afghanistan has been suspended.

Darwin last hosted Test matches in 2003 and 2004 against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, respectively, before largely disappearing from the international cricket calendar. However, Australia A recently played two unofficial Tests there against Sri Lanka A, and the T20Is against South Africa were held at TIO Stadium.

Mackay's Great Barrier Reef Arena, upgraded in 2023, is also a strong contender, having hosted WBBL matches. Cairns has hosted two Tests in the past, and Townsville has hosted ODIs, though lighting issues have impacted its recent viability.

Cricket Australia is exploring the possibility of more winter internationals in Darwin to extend the season and balance the summer schedule. Greenberg noted the strong support and sold-out crowds for the recent white-ball games, emphasizing the success of playing cricket during the shoulder seasons.
