Ashwin Eyes Player-Cum-Coach Role in Overseas Leagues Post-Retirement

Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who recently retired from all international cricket formats and the Indian Premier League (IPL), is now exploring new opportunities in his cricketing career. The 38-year-old off-spinner is particularly interested in a player-cum-coach role, leveraging his extensive experience and tactical expertise.

Post IPL retirement, Ashwin is set to explore opportunities in overseas leagues

Ashwin reportedly believes he still has a lot to contribute on the field and is eyeing a three-to-four-year playing window. He is currently in discussions with several international leagues, including:

  • Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA
  • The Hundred in England
  • ILT20 in the UAE
  • SA20 in South Africa

While the SA20 might be challenging for the upcoming season due to franchise signing lock-ins and an auction scheduled for September 9, the ILT20, with its auction on September 30, presents a viable opportunity. Notably, five of the six ILT20 franchises are Indian-owned, which could work in Ashwin's favor.

Additionally, Ashwin has been approached by officials from other leagues, such as the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia. His strategic brilliance and leadership qualities have always been highly valued, making a player-coach role a natural next step in his career.

Beyond playing, Ashwin has potential avenues in commentary and cricket administration, given his history of contributing innovative ideas to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, his immediate focus remains on continuing his playing career. Ashwin recently expressed his desire to enjoy his remaining years on the field without external pressures, stating, "I really want to enjoy my last couple of years hopefully without any judgements from anyone. I wanna live life on my terms."
